On October 19th, Now I Can Children's Fund sponsored a 2 hour indoor climbing activity at Gravity in Hamilton. 15 boys and girls from Our Kids Network, Aldershot Hub attended along with Hub Co-ordinator Sheila Slattery-Ford, Dan Wynnyk sponsor and fund holder and Heather Miller who kindly offered to take photos of the kids in action (see photo gallery). Following the climb, the kids were treated to a hearty meal at Kelseys.

In addition to making a grant each year through the Burlington Community Foundation, the Fund is also committed to sponsoring a fun activity for Burlington area kids which exposes them to a new learning opportunity they might not otherwise get.

Thank you again to Now I Can Supporters who made this memorable day possible.

Speaking on behalf of the youngsters who attended, Sheila Slattery-Ford provided the following comments . "Dan, you and Heather brought such enthusiasm, warmth and sense of fun again this year. The kids had so much fun as well as appreciated the opportunity for growth as they challenged themselves to go higher and try new walls which presented increasing difficulty. They left the evening having played hard for two intensive hours after which they were rewarded with a huge dinner at Kelseys followed by fun ride home in the big vans you provided. The kids are still talking about their experience and  will always remember the kindness and generosity of one very special human being. Thank you."

NOW I CAN CHILDREN'S FUND SPONSORS LOCAL BOY

NOW I CAN FUND SPONSORS LOCAL BOY.

Tony (not his real name) , a 12 year old local Burlington resident, unfortunately could not attend tryouts for the Burlington Skyhawks Bantam Boys rep basketball team.

The coaching staff noted his exceptional athletic ability and his outstanding basketball skills.  However, as a result of financial challenges , Tony's mother could not afford the registration fees for her son.

As a result of the financial assistance from the Now I Can Children's Fund, Tony was able to become a member of the team and contribute to a very successful basketball season which ended up ranked #1 in their respective division for the 2011 Ontario Basketball Championships. In addition, Tony was exposed to a positive environment which allowed him the opportunity to further develop his skills and contribute as an exceptional team player.

We are very appreciative of the support our Fund receives through personal and corporate donations and fundraising efforts .

Pleae help us continue to help Burlington youth by making a donation today.

Climber's Rock July 7, 2010

On July 9, 16 boys and girls selected by Our Kid's Network, Aldershot Hub challenged both body and mind at Climber's Rock, an indoor climbing facility in Burlington. The goal was to reconnect these kids wiith the fun, challenge and reward of climbing and to help develop their confidence and self-esteem.

The two hour climbing activity, the initiative of Dan Wynnyk and sponsored by the Now I Can Children's Fund was followed by friendly discussion over pizza at Boston Pizza.

Our Kid's Network is a partnership of agencies with a vision that states, 'All children in Halton thrive'. The Network opened a Hub in Aldershot; a community where thriving for many children and their families is a struggle due to poverty, a high rate of transiency and a high number of newcomers to Canada.

"Rock climbing is about setting a goal and reaching it by dealing with obstacles in the way, through strategic thinking and acting while being conscious of the risks involved," says Sheila Slattery-Ford, Hub Coordinator. "The Now I Can Fund gave these kids an opportunity that they would otherwise be unable to afford."

It was a fun day for all who participated. It gave the children something they could look forward to, an accomplishment they could be proud of, which in turn will help define who they are in a positive way.
